I've been playing Dead Rising 2 the last while after picking it up for free off xbox live and as much as I'm enjoying it, these time limits are really bothering me.I don't really feel like I'm enjoying the game as much as I could because I feel flustered trying to accomplish everything at once. I understand time limits for saving survivors but I'd much prefer if they left it for those missions only and left the main missions so that you could tackle them when you see fit.What do you think? I know, but it is under super hard mode. If it was Normal mode with a timer it would be fine, but it is hidden under some super special super hard mode and that is not fun.If it works any thing like all the ohter games then to play it on that i would have to gain levels or complete parts of it first to even survive there. So i would be forced to play through unfun modes to get acces to it.Now it was a toggle like say Iron man in Xcom then i would be golden and i would get a xboxone when ever it comes out over here. I bought a Xbox360 for Dead Rising and it was the best game i ever got on that system. The timer is 90% of what made that game special in my eyes and nightmare mode dose not sound fun. I absolutely love the time mechanic.

Without it I feel the Dead Rising games would lose a lot of structure. The game may be ridiculous and visceral, but it knows that if you give someone too much freedom it becomes boring. Escorting survivors and moving across the map would be tedious without it.The timer works together so well with the other design choices with the game.

The huge open world demands you to actually plan your approach. The mission structure forces you to keep your main goal in mind during every side story. The ability to restart the story gave you some leniency with your decisions, and it gave you a demonstration of how to make your next attempt better.None of that would have been possible without the timer. Basically I really respect it as a design choice and I admire the design of the game greatly.

Majora's Mask and Dead Rising's time systems exist for completely different reasons. Majora's Mask allowed you to experience everyone's story while creating a coherent world.

It wasn't there to create a tense atmosphere, it was there to create a depressing one. One where you have to accept that you can't do everything. Anju and Kafei's story was really touching, but you still had to reset the world immediately afterwards. It also showed you why the world was worth saving.Dead Rising's existed to keep you on track. Like you said, it was there to give you a sense of urgency, but if the game wanted you to do the main story, why give you this big sandbox?

It would be a different story if the game had branching paths, where you could skip a mission and the later missions would go differently, but you just lose. You could say that the time system is realistic, but the fact that you can simply fail the story is really arbitrary.
