Dell Laptop Power Button Not Working

It is a known get you out of a broken power button problem. Change windows 10 language. Some power buttons break or get stuck down and don't turn on because if you hold the button down normally on your laptop it shuts down a laptop or even a desktop therefor if it stuck down it wont power up it's waiting for the release then another click to power back on. I accidentally dropped my laptop, and now the power button is broken (the button is located on the right side, the same place i dropped it) My.

How can I start up my computer without using a power button? I think I have a broken power button (not completely sure, but pretty sure) and I want to know how to make it start up without using a power button. It is an ultrabook, and therefore it is not easy to take apart, attach wires to certain places in the motherboard, etc without special tools. I have already tried using a USB keyboard with a special 'power' button on it, but it didn't work. I do not have a PS/2 keyboard with that function.

Are there any other ways to do it? I have a warranty and could get it fixed, but I would rather get it working otherwise as it is more convenient than sending it in. Also, it is Lenovo Thinkpad Twist and I cannot remove the power button. Depending on the exact specs of your computer you MAY be able to switch it on through an Ethernet cable using Wake-On-Lan functionality triggered from another computer or device on the same LAN. ) I wish my HP Folio had that feature!

Other then that or opening the drive you probably can't. I doubt a power button on a keyboard would work for you - I suspect its only designed to work from certain partial sleep states - If the computer is powered down, there is no power to the USB port or monitoring it, so no ability to receive the trigger.A few machines have an 'alternative' power button to boot directly into a special setup mode.

You might be able to get some traction if you have one of these buttons. You should advise if thats the case.

The power button on my HP Pavillion is kaput! It seems to have no effect at all. The LED that illuminates the button when power is on is also not working. Fortunately, I can power the machine up by pressing one of the 'Quick Play' media buttons, then navigate from there back to Windoze.

I actually took the thing apart and tested the switch. There is nothing wrong with it, and all the cables associated with it seem to be properly connected. I supect something on the motherboard is banjaxed. Has anyone had a similar experience? I tried that, to no avail.

I suspect some component has failed. The failure mode was somewhat progressive over time as if some semiconductor was gradually going south.

What's slightly odd though is that the forced shutdown does not work either, and I think that goes straight to hardware. This laptop also has an infrared remote control which I never had much use for. It also has a power on/off function, but the remote does not seem to work at all (the battery in it is fine). As the laptop is more than five years old now, I'll probably just live with the issue until something else fails, then junk it! I seem to have an 'extra' screw now too.

Obviously I left it out when I put the laptop back together, but I can't find where it goes - oh well. Odd that you are able to find an alternative way to power it up.

Sometimes I have to remove the battery on my laptop for it to power up properly. But, it sounds like the button is bad.

I've repaired mouse buttons before. The button you see on the keyboard often has a switch underneath it. You might be able to replace the switch. But that would mean finding a replacement and soldering it in.

Some laptops may have a separate power bar that could be purchased on E-Bay for $10 or so. However, sometimes the switches can be carefully disassembled, in which case you may find a cover and a small metal disk inside the switch (or rubber/carbon disk). A speck of dust under the disk and the switch will fail. Clean everything up.

And cross your fingers.
