At least if you're still on Windows 7 (Virtual PC is awful, its only slightly redeeming quality is the fact that it comes with a working Windows XP license - XP Mode, also it's only in some editions of the OS), or don't have one of the Windows 8/10 editions that come with Hyper-V, and don't want to cough up some money for VMWare Workstation. You could also run Linux and KVM, which is probably the most powerful solution., but a tad more annoying to configure.
Good luck with a Windows base - yes, there's a more, but the former is slightly cheaper and closer to what many people already have. Maighstir: VirtualBox is great.

I haven't noticed any issues with it on Win 10, but I don't really do any 'power user' stuff with it, just run a couple of Linux distros for the fun of it.
